A Prayerful Heart
“And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
(Rom. 8:27; NASB)
All believers know they should pray every day. It is the most basic tenet of Christian behavior. Through regular prayer we grow closer to God and learn to recognize His voice above the noise of the world. It is where we can give Him our deepest gratitude and praise, as well as seek His guidance in everything we do. Unfortunately, not all who have confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior have adhered to this daily practice. You will never come to know the peace, joy, and comfort God wants to give you without regular prayer.
If that last statement hits a nerve, then it’s time for daily prayer to be at the top of your to-do list. You might say, “I can’t get everything done now, how am I supposed to find time to sit quietly and pray?” Maybe you’ve never prayed unless you had something specific to pray about. If you’ve never had a regular prayer life, you may not know how to go about it, and that’s ok. The Spirit aligns your words with your heart and Jesus intercedes with the Father on your behalf. All you need is a willing heart.
Prayer is not all about asking or telling God something. It’s much more than that. He knows all things, but that should not deter you from bringing all things to Him. In that effort we are willingly submitting them to Him, which is a big part of our relationship with Him. Trusting Him with everything from the smallest to the most important parts of your life is sometimes difficult. It’s through regular prayer that your trust will grow. A believer’s heart wants to trust God. It’s our brokenness that gets in the way. Prayer can change that.
Living a holy life in this evil world has many challenges. We must discuss everything with the Lord. I believe all prayer should begin with praise and thanksgiving for all He has done in our lives. Then, if there are specific desires or concerns in your life, talk about them. If you’re single and lonely, ask for the Lord to bring your life mate to you. If you’re married and would like something in your marriage to change, ask Him. Ask Him why things are happening or why they’re not. Go to Him with the most intimate and deepest (darkest) things in your life. Then sit quietly and listen. You won’t always feel like He’s there, but He is. He will answer your prayers according to His will, which is what we all should want.
Today’s verse says that He (Jesus), intercedes for (intervenes for), the saints (all believers), according to God’s will. It doesn’t matter if you say the right words or forget to mention something. God searches our hearts and provides what we need. Sometimes, what we’re asking for requires healing we never we knew we needed. But He knows, and through Him all things are possible.
Devote yourself to daily prayer. Don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. Just show up with a willing heart. You will experience a remarkable change within yourself and your daily life. Even if the situations around you don’t change, you will see them differently and find comfort and joy in God’s love.
Have a great week and God bless.
